Beating the Blues with Homeopathy

chronic, recurring, or severe depression, it is always advisable to seek professional
help. A homeopathic professional will treat each person on an individual basis,
so that no two people with depression, for example, will necessarily need the
same homeopathic medicine. All those symptoms relating to a person’s complaint
are taken into account, as well as their family and medical history, general
character, and the stresses leading up to the depression.

The homeopathic remedies listed below may be used to help with recent, acute
depression, where you can easily identify a cause.

Guidelines for taking a remedy:

  • Take one tablet of the indicated remedy (the 6th or 30th potency) three times
    daily for up to 3 days.
  • Stop if there is an improvement.
  • Start taking it again if it has helped and the symptoms return.
  • Seek advice from a homeopathic professional if:

  • you have to keep repeating the remedy
  • the remedy you choose does not help
  • your symptoms are long-standing, recurring, or severe.
  • Aurum metallicum. Depression after a business failure or a personal
    loss with feelings of guilt or betrayal. Feels worthless, as well as a deep despair.
    Everything seems sad and dark, as if there is a black cloud over everything.

    Causticum. Depression, especially after the death of a friend or
    a parent. They become negative and gloomy and full of anxious forebodings. They
    cry easily, especially over small things.

    Gelsemium. Paralyzed with grief—after a loss. Doesn’t
    recover from the shock. Finds it hard to cry. Becomes dull and sluggish on every
    level. Also, mild depression after
    an acute illness, especially the flu.

    Ignatia. Recent depression after a loss with shock, especially
    the loss of a child, parent, friend, or pet. Fights feelings of sadness around
    others, by taking deep sighing breaths and “swallowing” the grief,
    and ends up depressed with a sensation of a lump in the throat.

    Kali phosphoricum. Depression with nervous exhaustion from over-excitement,
    mental strain, or after an acute illness, especially the flu. They can’t
    work because they can’t concentrate even if they try, and they lose confidence
    in themselves because of this.

    Lachesis. Depression from the suppression of any emotion (especially
    jealousy) or during an emotionally and physically stressful transition such as
    menopause. The feelings of depression and anxiety are much worse in the mornings.

    Natrum muriaticum. “Silent” depression that comes on
    after a loss, a disappointment, or a betrayal. They hide their sadness, bitterness,
    and resentment. They can break down and cry but don’t want comforting and
    will get irritated with anyone who tries to comfort them.

    Natrum sulphuricum. Depression after head injury. Melancholy and
    does not want to talk with anyone. Severe headaches with sensitivity to light.

    Pulsatilla. Depression after a loss, jealousy, or betrayal. May
    also be indicated around childbirth, puberty, or at menopause. They feel lonely
    and cry easily—especially when talking about what has happened, and they
    feel much better after a good cry. They want sympathy and feel better for it.

    Sepia. Worn out, depressed, and irritable. They feel better for
    crying but want to be alone and don’t want to be comforted. They are indifferent
    to things that formerly gave them pleasure, including their partners, their children,
    and their work. Physical stresses include childbirth and difficulties during

    Zincum metallicum. Nervous exhaustion and depression caused by
    mental strain. They have difficulty in thinking and don’t want to talk
    much. They may forget what they are saying in the middle of a sentence.
