FTC to Host Public Workshop on Homeopathic Medicines

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will be holding a public workshop on September 21 to explore how over-the-counter (OTC) homeopathic medicines are advertised to consumers.

As with the FDA public hearing that took place in April of this year, NCH will have representation on site throughout the FTC public workshop. During the event we will represent the interests of the millions of homeopathic consumers in the US – people like yourself– to ensure that the FTC knows just how important access to homeopathic medicines is to consumers seeking the opportunity for CHOICE in their medical care. NCH will provide updates about the event as details are released to the public, as well as a summary of the events of the day.

This course is being jointly sponsored by NCH and the Homeopathic Nurses Association.

All practicing healthcare providers (not just nurses!) are welcome and encouraged to participate in this series to learn how to incorporate homeopathy into their existing practices.

Log in today to take the first course in the series. Nurses can earn 2 Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credits for the bargain price of only $30!

Come See Us In Connecticut!

NCH will be at the Levels of Health workshop featuring George Vitlhoukas at the University of Bridgeport Sept 19-20, 2015. If you’ll be there, stop by the NCH exhibit booth where Board of Directors members Abby Beale and Loretta Butehorn will be on hand to let you know how NCH can help improve you current homeopathic practice or set you up for success when you are ready to start your practice.

NCH Survey Results Are In!

As you may know, NCH conducted a survey of consumers of homeopathic products in June 2015 to gather data about consumer attitudes about and experiences with OTC homeopathic medicines. Nearly 20,000 consumers completed the survey and confirmed the anecdotal testimonials we've received from the homeopathic community over the past 40 years. The results show that consumers are very happy with OTC homeopathic medicines. Read More.

Ten Homeopathic Remedies for Simple Insomnia

Acute insomnia often develops in times of stress when you are unable to find the time to maintain your usual healthy habits.  If recent events have you tossing and turning consider one of these ten homeopathic remedies:

  • Coffea cruda – Drinking coffee causes a wakeful, somewhat excited state, and homeopathically prepared coffee is indicated for persons in just that same state. This state is sometimes caused by joy, pleasurable excitement, or sudden happy surprises; as well as by unexpected bad news. Such a state may also be found in those who drink too much wine or those over-fatigued from long journeys. When the person lies down to attempt to sleep, the mind is simply awake with a flow thoughts and ideas.
  • Nux vomica – The patient can often fall asleep early, but awakens at 3 or 4am with great mental activity or worries. When the time to rise comes around, the patient finally feels able to sleep but instead must get up in a tired, irritable state. This type of acute insomnia is commonly brought on by the overuse of drugs and/or stimulants, including alcohol, coffee, and wine, or by overwork or excess studying. The typical Nux vomica patient is irritable, easily angered, and impatient—in short, a grump. They are often chilly, nervous, and excitable.
  • Aconite – The patient needing Aconite is restless and excited with an anguished kind of fear. Such a state often comes on in the early stages of a sudden acute illness, often after a chill. But this state may also be caused by a shock or fright, such as a serious accident, natural disaster, or operation.
  • Chamomilla – The patient is usually in an irritable, uncivil state. They are often frantic with pain or irritability and say they "cannot stand it." They may have the peculiar symptom of being drowsy during the day, but unable to sleep in spite of sleepiness. This irritability is often found in teething infants who insist on being carried, or in adults that are up and pacing the floor.
  • Arnica – This is a well-known remedy for those with bruises and other sorts of trauma, and those needing this remedy for insomnia have often been in a recent accident or had recent exertion and strain. Such a state is known to travelers as "jet lag." Many patients routinely use Arnica for jet lag with great success. The patient is overtired but cannot sleep and may feel bruised, or the bed may feel too hard. Remember Arnica for those who have nightmares of the accidents or the injuries that they have suffered.
  • Cocculus – Those needing this remedy are sleepless from exhaustion. This often comes on from loss of sleep associated with night watching or nursing the sick. Their sleep may be interrupted by waking and starting. Patients needing this remedy are often emotionally sensitive, easily offended, and intolerant of contradiction, or may be extremely sad. Motion sickness is a symptom often seen in those who will respond to this remedy.
  • Belladonna – Patients who need this remedy may be sleepy, yet unable to sleep. They often start or jerk suddenly during sleep or when falling asleep. Teeth-grinding during sleep is a common symptom. They are often restless. This type of sleepless state is often seen in those coming down with an acute illness or fever.
  • Gelsemium – Patients are often dull and drowsy, maybe even trembling. They cannot get fully to sleep; their bodies are still and they may appear asleep from the outside, but they are on the edge of sleep internally. Sometimes they start on falling asleep. When finally asleep they may have restless sleep. Or, conversely, they may have a sort of nervous irritation, much like the Coffea patient, that comes on from anticipation of an upcoming event.
  • Capsicum – Think of homeopathic Capsicum for those with sleeplessness from homesickness or similar emotional states, especially if they have red cheeks.
  • Staphysagria – Consider this remedy for those who are sleepless after a fit of anger or after a dispute in which their honor was wounded and they suppressed their anger. (Some of the other remedies mentioned, such as Nux vomica, Aconite, Chamomilla, and Coffea also may have sleeplessness after a fit of anger. Look at other characteristics to distinguish one from the other.) Patients needing this remedy are often snappish and take offense easily.

There are other remedies that might be considered for acute insomnia. If none of the above remedies seems to fit your situation, then look in one of the many homeopathic self-care books or a comprehensive homeopathic materia medica for other ideas. If, however, you have chronic, long-term insomnia, it's best to consult a trained homeopathic practitioner.

Determining Constitution and Temperament Through the Use of Genogram

In homeopathy, as is the case with psychotherapy, it is taught that causation, constitution, and the totality of symptoms are three critical factors. Constitution and temperament is what many homeopaths view first in the patient. This helps contextualize symptoms that are similar and places them in the perspective. After practicing systemic psychotherapy for many years, Dr. Kenneth Silvestri has found that the most reliable information for developing a successful therapeutic plan comes from understanding someone’s temperament, and how they view themselves and others. To help assess and repertorize symptoms within the framework of temperament and constitution he uses the Genogram. The Genogram is a transgenerational and psychological family tree that depicts an individual’s relationships, family patterns and influences. Read the full article here.

THE ORGANON by Samuel Hahnemann –  An Outline
Provided in tribute to Julian Winston, May 1941 – June 2005, beloved Editor-In-Chief of Homeopathy Today for 21 years.

It is often said that studying The Organon is fundamental for any successful homeopath. In this series we glean some Winston Wisdom by revisiting Julian’s outline of this masterpiece.

Paragraphs 57-62 Lays out the philosophy of the system (continued)

  1. Examples of treating a single symptom with a contrary remedy
  2. Why anti-pathic is bad. Directed against a single symptom: a short amelioration followed by a long aggravation
  3. Examples of injurious effect of anti-pathic medicine
  4. Increasing doses of a palliative medicine never cures
  5. Physicians (if they had been capable of reflecting upon the sad results) should see the result of applying contrary medicines and understand that the homoeopathic way is better and the only way to cure
  6. The reason palliation is dangerous is explained in paragraphs 63-69.

Note: The above is only an outline. To comprehend The Organon in its fullness, we recommend that you read the book.
The Organon is usually studied by the intermediate to advanced student of homeopathy.

Have you heard of Meatless Monday? It is an international movement to help people reduce their meat consumption by 15%. Going meatless once a week (every Monday) may reduce your risk of chronic preventable conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. Also it helps to reduce your carbon footprint, and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water. Why, you ask, do we bring this up? A subscription to Vegetarian Times magazine is available at a deeply discounted price of $5 for NCH members ($17 for addresses outside the US). We often get questions about the process for taking advantage of this member benefit, so we have answered your frequently asked questions about it on our website here.

Attention Deficit, Anxiety & Rage: An Autoimmune Issue?
September 21, 2015, 8:00pm – 9:00pm ET

Join us with Jennifer Bahr, ND to discuss PANDAS.

With school starting and colder fall temperatures upon us, attention issues and rages are bound to worsen. Kids will also start coming home with strep throat. What do the two have to do with each other? In this webinar, Dr. Bahr will go over the basic concepts of PANDAS, a condition in which an autoimmune response to strep causes neurological and psychiatric symptoms in children, and its homeopathic treatment. She will go over the condition itself, lab testing for it, and give case examples of homeopathic prescriptions.

A special thanks to Karen B. Allen, CCH for providing the REPERTORY QUIZ to Homeopathy Today magazine in 2003.

Your partner was in a minor rear-end car accident. They're OK, just bumps and bruises. The bigger problem is their attitude. They are indignant, bitter, and are threatening a lawsuit. What remedy would you think of?

Stories of Inspiration

A family member of mine was barbecuing in the back yard and got several mosquito bites. Not only were the bites large, red and itchy, his nose was red and dripping, and his eyes were red and puffy. While he is usually very skeptical about alternative therapies, and teases me about my choice to use and study homeopathy, he is feeling increasingly worse and desperate to feel better. He asks if I have anything that could help him; I gave him Ledum 30C. Within minutes he admitted to feeling significantly better and the improvements were visual to us as well. Another dose about 30 minutes later got rid of lingering symptoms.

Several years later we had a repeat of this scenario. This time the family member came to me right away asking for more of that "magic stuff." A single dose of Ledum 200C cleared all of his symptoms within 10 minutes.

Having a homeopathic medicine kit and knowing some basics can prevent a lot of discomfort and trouble!

Homeopath Without Borders (HWB)

An update on HWB’s work with Haitian patients suffering from chronic chikungunya symptoms:

A homeopathic study, directed by HWB's Clinical Director Lauren Fox, FNP, BC, CCH, began in March of 2015. It involved four sites, three days of clinics and 171 patients.  At the two week follow-up, we found that nearly 80 percent of patients were improving or even “felt much better” since homeopathic treatment.

Follow-ups have continued at four week intervals. During July’s clinic, HWB volunteer Shelly Clevidence, ND, wrote, “…Often, their symptoms would begin to resolve within two weeks of taking a homeopathic remedy. They have been able to return to their activities of daily living without the severe joint pain Chikungunya had inflicted on them...” Read Dr. Clevidence’s blog at

North American Society of Homeopaths (NASH)
